ΠΕΡΙΛΗΨΗ
In 1959, Archbishop Makarios III commissioned the Freedom Monument to commemorate the struggles Greek Cypriots went through and to underscore their commitment to the fight for freedom. The monument features 17 statues; including the Liberty Statue. Statues of two militants opening a prison gate, allowing prisoners to escape, those prisoners are 14 Greek Cypriots from all walks of life and age groups. The unveiling ceremony of the monument was scheduled for July 15, 1974, but it was overshadowed by the coup d’etat. In the battle at Archbishop Palace, many were killed… Eleftheria was struck in the chest. An invasion followed… New slavery.
